About the Coalition

The Central Healthy Start Coalition is a nonprofit organization that was incorporated in 1992. The Coalition is the leader in maternal and child health care for Central Florida and includes the following counties:

  • Citrus
  • Hernando
  • Lake
  • Sumter

 

 

 

Coalition Responsibilities:

The Coalition is responsible for the formation and administration of the Central Healthy Start system, which includes management of subcontracts for quality services to pregnant women and children up to age 3, monitoring services through quality improvement and assurance responsibilities and accountability.

WellFlorida Council

The Central Healthy Start Coalition has established an agreement with the WellFlorida Council to serve as the fiscal agent and provide staff services to the Coalition. WellFlorida is a private, nonprofit organization designated as the Local Health Council for 16 counties, including the 4 counties in the Coalition service area. Local Health Councils are established by state law and funded by contract with the Department of Health to provide regional planning, data collection and analysis, and technical services to communities as they address health problems.

The staff’s responsibilities include:

  • Board and Coalition support and development
  • Contract management and monitoring
  • Quality assurance reviews
  • Fiscal and programmatic reporting
  • Promotion of the Healthy Start goals of improved birth outcomes and screening rates
