Healthy Start: Maternal and Infant Care
The Florida Legislature created the Healthy Start Program in 1991 to help improve the health of pregnant women and their babies. Florida statute requires that all pregnant women and newborn babies be offered the benefit of a Healthy Start screening questionnaire. The Healthy Start screen will help the healthcare provider determine if the pregnant woman or newborn can benefit from Healthy Start services. Healthy Start of North Central Florida Coalition comprises 12 counties in the north central Florida region. Central Healthy Start Coalition is composed of 4 counties in west central Florida.
Eligibility:
Healthy Start eligibility is NOT based on income. Participation in the Healthy Start program is approved if a pregnant woman or child, birth to 3 years old, has identified risks or needs that may lead to poor health.
Services:
Healthy Start is a voluntary program that facilitates access to prenatal and child health care. Healthy Start also provides education and support in interconceptional health, parenting, childbirth and breastfeeding as well as psychosocial counseling and care coordination services.
Community Involvement:
Healthy Start Coalitions are made up of ordinary people who live and work in their community. Coalitions work with the Department of Health to ensure that funding assigned to their communities is used to help moms and babies decrease their risks and stay healthy.
