As the March 31 deadline to sign up for health insurance on the federal exchanges approaches, local navigators are hosting a public enrollment event on Saturday.

The sign-up will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at HealthStreet at 2401 Archer Road. It is one of several sign-up events that navigators and application counselors have held in the past few months.

As of February, 296,892 Floridians had signed up for health insurance, the vast majority for the Silver Plan, in which insurance companies cover about 70 percent of health care costs, with the remainder of expenses paid out of pocket.

As of December, navigators in North Central Florida — covering Alachua, Putnam, Suwannee, Lafayette, Columbia, Hamilton, Marion and Sumter counties — had enrolled approximately 341 people and reached 2,219 others through similar events.

People who do not have employer-sponsored health insurance and are eligible for the exchanges but do not sign up will have to pay a penalty. After March 31, the next enrollment period for the federal exchanges begins on Nov. 15.

To sign up for the health insurance exchanges on Saturday, people should bring their Social Security card, employer and income information, and policy numbers for any current health insurance plans.
