The Marion County Hospital District now has the beginnings of a framework by which it can decide how to financially support Marion County healthcare endeavors.

The district, which owns Munroe Regional Medical Center on behalf of the public, but leased it a year ago to a national healthcare conglomerate, commissioned a survey of Marion County’s healthcare needs. Central Healthy Start and Healthy Start of North Central Florida have released the summer 2015 issue of A Healthy Start. Readers can expect to learn valuable information on topics such as prenatal care, water safety and why breastfeeding is best. Designed for pregnant women and mothers of children up to three years old, the bulletins are published twice a year by WellFlorida Council and Healthy Start. Bulletins will be distributed to pediatricians, hospitals and clinics across 16 counties. PDF versions can be downloaded at wwww.centralhealthystart.org and www.healthystartncf.org.

The Florida Department of Health and WellFlorida Council have grant funding available for organizations that run diabetes self-management education programs in a 16-county region that includes Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Lafayette, Levy, Marion, Putnam, Suwannee and Union.

The grant amounts range from $2,000 to $10,000.

A pair of reports released this week revealed promising signs and continued areas of concern for the health and welfare of Florida’s children.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s annual Kids Count report ranked Florida 37th of the 50 states for the overall well-being of children, a measure that looks at economic status, education, health and family and community stability.

The health fair will emphasize health insurance literacy, opportunities for special enrollment periods in the ACA Marketplace options for coverage through Medicaid and Medicare, and low cost or charity care for people in the coverage gap.

Health Insurance Marketplace Navigators will be on hand to answer questions along with other organizations such as: ACORN Clinic, FL KidCare, HealthStreet, Suwannee River AHEC, and many more.

On August 13, Santa Fe College will be hosting their 3rd Annual Health Information Technology Summit in Building S, Room S-029 (near the SFC Bookstore.) The summit will take place from 9:30am to 11:30am, and there will be four unique sessions with guest speakers.
