OUR OPINION: You can play a role in the future for Citrus County.

When the topic is “health,” most of us probably think in terms of aches and pains, diseases or medical conditions, access to care or how to pay for it.  But a community’s health encompasses so much more, including such factors as jobs and the economy, water quality, access to exercise opportunities, reliable transportation, affordable housing, alcohol/drug/tobacco use and strong family ties, among many others.

The health fair will emphasize health insurance literacy, opportunities for special enrollment periods in the ACA Marketplace options for coverage through Medicaid and Medicare, and low cost or charity care for people in the coverage gap.

Health Insurance Marketplace Navigators will be on hand to answer questions along with other organizations such as: ACORN Clinic, FL KidCare, HealthStreet, Suwannee River AHEC, and many more.

The fair will take place on August 1, from 11am to 3pm at the Boltin Center in Gainesville.

On August 13, Santa Fe College will be hosting their 3rd Annual Health Information Technology Summit in Building S, Room S-029 (near the SFC Bookstore.) The summit will take place from 9:30am to 11:30am, and there will be four unique sessions with guest speakers.

Topics such as: Information Governance, Privacy/Security, and Data Management will be covered in the sessions. HIM professionals, healthcare staff, IS personnel, administrators, and any interested clinicians are invited to attend.

The Florida Department of Health, Division of Community Health Promotion, is partnering with WellFlorida Council to manage mini-grant distribution and provide technical assistance and expert mentoring services to diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs in Alachua, Bradford, Citrus, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Putnam, Sumter, Suwannee and Union Counties. The North Central Florida Cancer Control Collaborative (NFCCC) will be holding a training aimed at community health workers (CHW). There will be three training topics covering: how to get certified as a CHW in Florida, motivational interviewing techniques and the best practices for community health workers. The training will be held at the Santa Fe College Center for Innovation and Economic Development on July 29 from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.

Citrus County residents are invited to share their views on health and healthcare in their community by taking a 10 to 15 minute survey. The Citrus County Community Health Advisory Partnership (C-CHAP) is conducting the survey beginning on July 6, 2015. Tiffen Lovler breathed easy last Thursday.

After several months of uncertainty, the Supreme Court ruling in King v. Burwell came out and Lovler, 27, knew that he would be able to keep the tax credits that made it possible for him to buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

“It’s a relief,” he said. “It will let me keep my insurance because it will be affordable to me.”
